Tumaini University Makumira has received a grant from the European Union
for the project “Traditional Music and Dance Preservation and Promotion
in Northern Tanzania” and now invites applications for the following
part-time positions for the new Cultural Arts Centre (CAC):
1. Dance Instructor (15 hrs/week)
Dance Instructor Requirements:
1) Tanzanian preferred. Excellent knowledge of English and Kiswahili with strong oral and written communication skills.
2) Bachelor’s Degree in dance, music, performing arts preferred.
3) At
least 2 years work experience in instructor role with arts organization,
festival, or tourism related field. Work experience in East Africa and
abroad preferred.
4) Strong organizational, people and time management skills
5) Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multi-cultural work environment
Primary job responsibilities:
To provide dance instruction for the Cultural Arts Centre at Makumira, including:
1) Working
with the artistic team to create multiple traditional dance
performances per week at the new Cultural Arts Centre targeting
international and local audiences. Several different shows will be
developed and used in rotation.
2) Teaching,
demonstrating, and choreographing various dances to the auditioned
dancers to produce professional quality traditional dance performances
and events for the Centre. Initially there will be a 2 month dance
training, then auditions for the paid dancers with an additional 2
months of training and professional skills.
3) Assisting with additional duties as qualified and time allows.
(Note: it may be possible to be a dance instructor and a dancer in the
troupe or for additional teaching opportunities through the Centre
and/or University for highly qualified person.)

2. Technical Director (15 hrs/week)
Technical Director Requirements:
6) Tanzanian preferred. Excellent knowledge of English and Kiswahili with strong oral and written communication skills.
7) Bachelor’s Degree in music, performing arts or technical theatre preferred.
8) At
least 3 years work experience in a technical role with arts
organization, festival, or performance related field. Work/study
experience in East Africa and abroad is an advantage.

Primary job responsibilities:
To coordinate the performance technical needs for the Cultural Arts Centre at Makumira, including:
4) Working
with the artistic team to create multiple traditional dance
performances per week at the new Cultural Arts Centre targeting
international and local audiences. Several different shows will be
developed and used in rotation.
5) Designing,
organizing and implementing all technical aspects (sound, lighting,
stage needs) to produce professional quality traditional dance
performances and events for the Centre. Equipment includes new
state-of-the-art digital sound and lighting for 1,200 seat and 250 seat
performance facilities, in addition to analogue systems for smaller
venues and run out performances.
6) Overseeing maintenance of all technical equipment (sound, lighting, stage)
7) Running sound and lights for Centre performances
(Note: it may be possible to get additional teaching opportunities
through the Centre and/or University for a highly qualified person.)

with the Programme Manager to create the artistic framework for
multiple traditional dance performances per week at the new Cultural
Arts Centre targeting international and local audiences. Several
different shows will be developed and used in rotation.
9) Coordinate
and oversee the additional dance instructor(s) and technical director
and auditioned dancers to produce professional quality traditional dance
performances and events for the Centre.
10) Assist
in the teaching and polishing of various dances and music to the
auditioned dancers. Initially there will be a 2 month dance training,
then auditions for the paid dancer troupe with an additional 2 months of
training and professional skills courses.
11) Participate
in the preparation of production proposals, artist recommendations, and
skill development opportunities for artistic personnel.
12) Fostering and encouraging continued growth and development of artistic excellence within the Cultural Arts Centre.

through the Centre and/or University for a highly qualified person.)
